Physician Assistant (PA) - NeurosurgeryFt. Belvoir, VAPosition
Duties and Responsibilities:Provides the necessary on-site support
to successfully establish new Tele-TBI, Neurosurgery, and other
Tele-Health sites. These duties include supporting site setup; use
and management of Video Tele- Conference (VTC) equipment;
establishing clinical protocol for management of Tele-TBI, Tele-
Neurosurgery, and other Tele-Health patients. Responsible for
providing template management and appropriate coding for the care
rendered. Provides direct support to Patient Centered Medical Home
(PCMH) teams to identify requirements for and setup of telehealth
specialty clinics.Provides start-up and training of on-site
Tele-Health PAs. The on-site PA receives orientation/training from
the designated supervising physician and PA. This training includes
scope of practice; operational site administration; standard
operating procedures; patient consent and other forms; clinical
management; patient referrals and appointing, and guidance on
coding and proper workload documentation. The PA interfaces with
institutional and regional referral providers to develop a robust,
consistent and efficient conduit for urgent and routine TBI,
neurosurgical, headache, and other appropriate referrals that will
recapture high-acuity and high-cost workload. Consults with primary
care providers about referral indications, proper workup and
management of TBI, neurosurgical, headache, and other appropriate
conditions. Sets up and provides template management, and trains on
site physician assistants in appropriate coding.Develops and
participates in marketing plans and presentations for Tele-TBI,
Tele-Neurosurgery and other Tele-Health initiatives throughout the
DoD. Enhances awareness through collaboration with other health
care providers and conveys a positive impression of each clinic in
the Military Healthcare community.Teaches and performs screening
process to diagnose and treat patients referred for TBI, headache,
neurosurgery or other Tele-Health start-up programs such as
Tele-Dermatology. The PA may initially run the clinic and see
patients while the permanent on-site PA is being trained.Schedules,
presents, and consents patients for Video Tele-Conference (VTC)
specialty consults based on indications. Prepares and forwards
patient documentation, radiological studies and lab tests to
consulting specialist before consult. Manages VTC consult sessions;
including follow-up VTC visits. Schedules and manages pre-operative
review (if surgery is recommended).May prescribe medication for
disease of the brain, central nervous system, spinal cord,
peripheral nervous systems within his or her scope of practice,
under the supervision of the supervising physician. Refers/presents
cases to the supervising physician. Provides follow-up care as
necessary to ensure continuity of care. Provides guidance on
establishing appointment appropriate, timely referrals to other
providers and/or resources to match patient's needs. Coordinates to
establish appropriate medical plan of care inclusive of maximizing
conservative medical management and consulting with ancillary
providers.Responds to cardiopulmonary arrest as appropriate and
arranges appropriate back up from the clinical staff and/or from
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) as appropriate.Quality Improvement
shall include the following responsibilities:Assist in quality
improvement data collection and review.Help with problem solving
regarding quality improvement issues.Participate in
multidisciplinary functional groups and process action teams as
needed.Uphold established patient care and practice
standardsParticipate in ongoing review of clinic policies and
procedures and make appropriate revisions as required.Review and
submit reports as required.Participate in all mandatory
training.Minimum Qualifications:A graduate of study or training
program approved by a nationally recognized professional medical
body, such as the American Medical Association, association of
American Medical Colleges, or by panel of physicians established by
a Federal agency for this purpose.Must be board certified and
maintain certification as a physician assistant by the National
Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) without
additional education and training. Must possess and maintain a
valid, unrestricted state license to practice as a physician
assistant in any state in the United States, District of Columbia
or United States territory.Must possess professional knowledge of a
wide range and variety of diseases and types of injuries pertaining
to the brain, central nervous system, spinal cord, peripheral
nervous systems. Supplementary skills to recognize emergency
conditions that require immediate referral or involvement of
qualified medical personnel and perform designated treatment.Must
possess a working knowledge of military culture, customs, and
procedures including military profiles and retention of Active Duty
personnel.Ability to effectively communicate with health providers
at all levels and to provide professional assistance to health care
finders in making referrals to appropriate health care
providers.Knowledge of standard prescription medications and their
applications in order to properly prescribe medications for common
illnesses.Ability to collect and record medical histories and
conduct general physical examinations.Ability to communicate both
orally and in writing in a clear, concise, and well-organized
manner.Must have a working knowledge of CPT/ICD-9/10 codes. Must
have experience in word processing and be computer literate.Minimum
of four years experience practicing as a physician assistant within
the past five years. A minimum of two years experience in the
treatment and management of TBI and a minimum of 2 years experience
as a Neurosurgical, Neurology or Orthopedic Spine PA required.Shall
have and maintain current certification in Basic Cardiac Life
Support (BCLS). Certification must be by American Heart Association
and individual must demonstrate ability to initiate CPR in event of
respirator or cardiopulmonary arrest. Certifications must be
renewed every year at no additional cost to the Government.Shall
have current Drug Enforcement Agency number.Must be a US
